This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, share, and protect your personal information in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA) and other applicable South African legislation.

Compuways is a specialist IT recruitment agency based in South Africa, operating since 1990. We act as the Responsible Party for personal information processed through our platform.

3.1 Job Seekers (Candidates)
When you register as a candidate we collect:
- Full name and surname
- Email address and telephone numbers
- Current job title and employer
- Location / area of residence
- Salary expectation
- Employment preferences (permanent, contract, remote)
- Technical skills and years of experience
- Academic qualifications and certifications
- Work history and CV content
- Application activity on our platform
3.2 Employers
When you register as an employer we collect:
- Company name and registration details
- Contact person name and designation
- Business email address and telephone number
- Physical and postal address
- Billing and invoicing details
3.3 Automatically Collected Information
- IP address and browser type
- Pages visited and time spent on the platform
- Referring website
- Session cookies (see our Cookie Policy)
4. How We Use Your Personal Information
4.1 Candidates
- To create and maintain your candidate profile
- To match your profile with suitable job opportunities
- To present your profile (with your consent) to registered employers
- To communicate with you about job opportunities and application status
- To send job-related email notifications (if you have opted in)
- To comply with legal and regulatory obligations
4.2 Employers
- To create and maintain your employer account
- To present relevant candidate profiles for your vacancies
- To process job listings and applications
- To send invoices and process payments
- To communicate regarding recruitment services
- To comply with legal and regulatory obligations
5. Legal Basis for Processing
- Consent — you have given explicit consent by registering and accepting these terms
- Contractual necessity — processing is required to deliver our recruitment services
- Legitimate interests — to improve our platform and prevent fraud
- Legal obligation — to comply with applicable South African law
6. Sharing of Personal Information
We do not sell your personal information. We may share it with:
- Registered employers — candidate profiles are shared only for specific vacancies
- Service providers — email delivery (Brevo SMTP), hosting (Vercel / Neon), operating under data processing agreements
- Legal authorities — where required by law, court order, or to protect our rights
Employers who receive candidate profiles are bound by POPIA and may only use that information for the specific recruitment purpose for which it was shared.
7. Cross-Border Transfers
Our platform is hosted on cloud infrastructure in the European Union (Frankfurt, Germany). By using our platform you consent to this transfer, which is protected by appropriate safeguards including contractual data processing agreements with our hosting providers.
8. Retention of Personal Information
- Active candidate profiles: retained while your account is active
- Inactive candidate profiles: retained for up to 5 years after last login, then anonymised or deleted
- Application records: retained for 2 years after the application date
- Employer accounts: retained while the business relationship is active, then 5 years for financial records
You may request deletion of your account at any time (see Section 10).
9. Security of Personal Information
- Encrypted database connections (TLS/SSL)
- Encrypted session cookies (AES-256)
- Password hashing (bcrypt)
- Access controls limiting staff access to personal data
- Regular security reviews
In the event of a data breach that poses a risk to data subjects, we will notify the Information Regulator and affected individuals as required by POPIA.
10. Your Rights Under POPIA
- Access — request a copy of the personal information we hold about you
- Correction — request that inaccurate information be corrected
- Deletion — request erasure of your personal information (subject to legal retention obligations)
- Objection — object to processing of your personal information
- Withdraw consent — withdraw your consent to marketing communications at any time
- Complain — lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator at www.inforeg.org.za
