About the job:

Company Modelling and Digital Science (MDS) has a vacancy for a Systems Engineer in a

research environment. MDS focuses on advanced mathematical modelling (AMM),

information security (IS) and hosting mobile intelligent autonomous systems (MIAS). The unit

assists in the Companies drive to strengthen science, engineering and technology (SET) outputs; develops human capital; and invests in emerging research areas (ERA), including

nanotechnology, synthetic biology and mobile intelligent autonomous systems. This position

is based in Pretoria.

The incumbent will be responsible for requirements analysis, architecture, verification and

validation and systems engineering management as well as leading performance analysis

and validation of models for trade off studies within MDS. An important part of the job will be to develop systems engineering skills in other engineers.


Key responsibilities:

Strategic project management:

Coordinate system development tasks to include design, integration and

formal testing strategy.

Create business and technical use cases in order to make sure that the

proposed architecture and design meet business objectives.

Work within the framework of applicable industry regulations (e.g. ISO7816


Technical and strategic deliverables within the project:

Create and maintain programmatic and technical documentation to ensure

efficient planning and execution.

Conduct, design and develop work in smart card and biometrics systems.

Develop and complete tasks in system specifications, technical and logistical

requirements, based on the business needs, and keeping other constraints in

mind such as budget and time lines required.


Client liaison:

Help define clients needs and product requirements by working with the

technical and domain experts.

Contribute to the improvement of organisational processes using CMMI approaches.

Provide technical direction and mentorship to junior researchers in the group.


Qualifications, skills and experience:

A Masters degree in electrical/electronic engineering or computer science.

A minimum of three years work experience in the engineering field, involving

research and development role.

Experience in firmware development is an advantage.

Must have experience of preparation of documentations within the systems

engineering framework.

Ability to bring product development projects to finalisation.

Ability to read outside the immediate field in order to factor in diverse client/product


Must have the ability to work independently within a research team environment.

Previous experience and a proven record of technical leadership abilities.

Strong coordination, organisation, teaming and communication abilities.

Experience in providing technical direction to project and team members.

Ability to present and document technical information.

Good communication skills and fluency in English.


South African citizenship is necessary as a security clearance is required for this position.
